Today, I am thrilled to share one of the most captivating experiences I’ve had recently: a fishing trip off the stunning coast of Positano with the renowned fisherman Alberto Russo. Join me as we dive into the serene beauty of the sea and the timeless art of traditional fishing.
The adventure began at dawn when I met Alberto Russo, the owner of Positano Fishing Tours, at the picturesque Positano dock. Alberto, a seasoned fisherman with an intimate knowledge of the local waters, welcomed me with a warm smile and a firm handshake. The excitement of learning
from a true expert filled the air.
As the first light of day touched the horizon, we boarded Alberto’s fishing boat and set sail. The calm of the sea, combined with the rhythmic sound of waves against the bow, created an almost magical atmosphere. I was eager to uncover the secrets of traditional fishing that Alberto was about to share.
Upon reaching our fishing spot, Alberto introduced me to the ancient and respectful technique known as “palamito,” traditionally called “coffa” in Positano. This method involves setting longlines with multiple hooks, which are placed in harmony with the natural environment, allowing fish to be caught sustainably. Watching Alberto skillfully retrieve the coffa, revealing the day’s catch, was a moment of pure wonder. This method, so in tune with nature, underscored the deep connection between the fisherman and the sea.
Throughout the morning, as we gathered the coffa, Alberto and I exchanged stories and laughter.
He spoke of the life of a Positano fisherman, deeply intertwined with the rhythms of nature. It was
enlightening to hear how the sea shapes every aspect of his life and work, instilling a profound
respect for the environment.
With our boat laden with fresh fish, we headed back to the port, our hearts light and spirits high. I
thanked Alberto for an unforgettable experience, and he graciously invited me to return for
another adventure. The thought of cooking with such fresh, local fish filled me with anticipation,
and I look forward to sharing those recipes with you.
This remarkable day on the water stirred memories of my own childhood. I recalled the joy of
harvesting fresh produce from my mother’s garden and the days spent fishing with my father. We
would bring home our catch and create delightful pairings of fish and vegetables. These moments
of joy and creativity have profoundly shaped my approach to cooking.
